      Gordons Bay

While Cape Town has countless activities to offer any guest during their stay at one of our Cape Town apartment rentals, there is a lot to be said for a long drive and a day out exploring a quaint little town. Gordons Bay is such a town, found along the eastern edge of False Bay and not too far away, about 45 minutes from Cape Town.

Gordons Bay is a harbour town and many of its activities revolve around the active working harbour as well as its lovely beaches, the best of which is Bikini Beach. Bikini Beach was recently awarded blue flag status and its slight swells with few breaking waves make it an ideal spot for swimming. Guests of our Capetown apartments will also find that the waters on this side of False Bay are much warmer than many of the beaches in Cape Town, particularly those surrounding our Camps Bay and Llandudno apartment rental Cape Town.

While differing greatly from the waterfront apartments Cape Town has to offer, Gordons Bays’ harbour and surrounds are nevertheless very charming. The harbour is an excellent place to buy fresh fish to take back to your Cape Town apartment rental to prepare for supper. The shops that line the beachfront offer wonderful places to buy an ice cream, take aways or sea themed curios.

For superb views of Cape Town and the surrounding towns of Strand and Somerset West, drive up the slopes of Hottantots Holland Mountains on which Gordons Bay is built. See if you can spot a whale before heading back to your accommodation Cape Town South Africa, or check out Steenbras Dam, also located atop the mountain above Gordons Bay. This magnificent dam holds much of Cape Towns drinking water and its mass is a sight to behold.

      Gold of Africa Museum

The Gold of Africa Museum is located in Strand Street, Cape Town and is committed to preserving goldsmithing, an ancient African art. It houses 350 West African gold artifacts and objects that remain from ancient civilizations that once practiced goldsmithing.

The Gold of Africa Museum has held many temporary exhibitions from countries including India, Brazil, Mali and Egypt in an attempt to demonstrate elements of design that are common to all of these cultures.

The building that houses the museum is itself a national treasure. It was originally the Martin Melck House, constructed in 1783 and was named after the businessman Martin Melck. The building was restored in 2000 and remains a fine example of the domestic architecture of the period.

The Gold Restaurant is found in the courtyard of the Gold of Africa Museum and is known not only for its African and Cape Malay cuisine but also for its interactive drumming sessions and puppetry performances. It is a unique culinary experience where dinner is brought to the table on the heads of the waiters and is served in portions meant to be shared by the entire table, rather than savored alone. The gold restaurant can cater up to 200 diners in their courtyard, there is also a dining room, a private dining room, deck and a wine cellar.  It is also possible to organize a night tour of the museum after you have enjoyed your meal.

The Gold of Africa Museum is open Monday to Saturday, they also offer a separate lion walking tour, where visitors follow the golden paw prints of the Cape Mountain lion statue, found outside the museum. This tour allows visitors to discover historic sites of interest within the area. The Museum is also open to arranging private tours on request that in the past have included interactive goldsmith demonstrations.

Guests of our Cape Town Luxury Apartments who are seeking an informative experience with the same dose of glitz and glamour to be found in our exquisitely decorated apartments, should definitely visit the Gold of Africa Museum.
